However, many consumers don\u2019t take an active role in managing and monitoring their credit scores or credit files. Depending on the specific data used to calculate a score, the actual credit score number can vary from one scoring model to another.\u00a0 Most credit scores range from 300 \u2013 850.\u00a0 Higher scores make it easier to qualify for a loan and may result in better terms, such as interest rates and length of the loan.<\/p>\n<h3>Seeking Credit<\/h3>\n<p>When consumers seek credit, whether it be for a mortgage, auto loan, credit card, or another type of credit product, the lender will request access to the consumer\u2019s <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2741\" src=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-3-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-3-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-3-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-3-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/>credit and obtain copies of his or her credit reports and credit scores.<br \/>\nThis information will assist the lender in determining whether to extend credit, and\u00a0if so, the interest rate on the loan or credit card, and the credit limit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some guidelines that may help you to get and keep a good credit score<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pay your loans in full and on time.<\/li>\n<li>Keep credit balances low in relation to the full credit limit<\/li>\n<li>Develop good payment history over time<\/li>\n<li>Only apply for the credit you need<\/li>\n<li>Review your credit reports regularly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>What is a Credit Report?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Credit-Report-Detail-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Credit-Report-Detail-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Credit-Report-Detail-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Credit-Report-Detail-1024x677.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Credit-Report-Detail.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Transunion, Experian and Equifax are the three main credit reporting bureaus.\u00a0 These bureaus provide credit reports which list specific information about a consumer\u2019s credit activity and payment history. Lenders use these reports to help determine whether to extend credit or not.\u00a0 As well, other businesses such as insurance companies and utilities, or prospective employers and landlords, may request access to a consumer\u2019s report for use in making decisions about you.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/what-you-should-know-about-employment-credit-checks\/\">Shall I give you a job offer?<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/who-are-the-credit-reporting-agencies\/\">Rent you an apartment?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many people use apps, such as CreditKarma or Credit Sesame, to get a sense of where their credit stands.\u00a0 But these apps do <em>not <\/em>show your credit report.\u00a0 Instead, they give you only a superficial snapshot of the status of your accounts.\u00a0 They may not show the most up-to-date information about your credit file, which may reflect inaccurately reported missed payments from years ago.\u00a0 The only way you can see the most current information on your credit file is to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/how-to-get-a-copy-of-your-credit-report\/\">obtain your credit report<\/a><\/span> from one of the three main bureaus \u2013 Transunion, Experian and Equifax.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What type of information is on a Credit Report?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The type of information listed on credit reports can include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal information:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Your name and name changes, current and former addresses, birth date, social security number and phone numbers.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Credit Accounts<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<em>Name of creditor &amp; account type, balance, payment history, credit limit &amp;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>date opened\/closed.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Collection Accounts<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<em>Credit accounts that have been assigned to a collection agency.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Public Records<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<em>Liens, Foreclosures, Bankruptcies, Civil suits and Judgments<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Hard Pull Inquiries<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<em>Lenders that access a consumer\u2019s credit file in the process of extending new credit.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Soft Pull Inquiries<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<em>Businesses access consumer files for the purpose of extending a new<\/em><br \/>\n<em>credit opportunity or service.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Check your credit reports for accuracy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Credit reports should be reviewed regularly for accuracy<\/span>. When incorrect information appears on a credit report, the consumer must send a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/what-is-a-credit-dispute-letter\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">written dispute to the credit bureau<\/span><\/a>. The dispute letter must clearly state the error that appears on the report and include documents that support the claim for correction.\u00a0 The bureaus have 30 days to respond in writing to the dispute.\u00a0 If the error is not corrected, the consumer may need to <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/credit-reporting-issues\/\">seek counsel<\/a> <\/span>from a qualified consumer protection lawyer.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How to Obtain a Credit Report?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Send a written request to the credit bureau<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consumers may <span style=\"color: #000000;\">obtain credit reports<\/span> by writing to Transunion, Experian and Equifax.
