Credit reports provide detailed information related to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Credit-History-and-Score-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Credit Report and Credit History\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Credit-History-and-Score-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Credit-History-and-Score-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Credit-History-and-Score-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Credit-History-and-Score.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>the consumer&#8217;s credit accounts, including balances and payment history.\u00a0 When reports reflect incorrect information, lenders may deny applications for credit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before submitting a credit application<\/strong>, consumers should obtain current credit reports from each bureau \u2013 <em>Transunion, Experian and Equifax<\/em> &#8212; and evaluate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/your-key-to-financial-health-maintain-an-accurate-credit-report\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>reports for accuracy.<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0 If there are errors, written disputes must be sent to the bureau.<\/p>\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/how-to-get-a-copy-of-your-credit-report\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">obtain credit reports<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, prepare a request and send it by US Mail to the bureau.\u00a0 The letter should be accompanied by two forms of identification, such as a current driver\u2019s license, a utility bill, or pay stub.\u00a0 It may take about two weeks to receive reports from the three bureaus.\u00a0 Alternatively, you could visit <em>annualcreditreport.com<\/em> to obtain reports online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP 2: \u00a0Review credit reports for items that could hurt your Credit Score<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Banks, credit unions or financial <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2740\" src=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-2-300x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-2-300x266.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-2-1024x908.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-2-768x681.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-2-1536x1361.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Photo-2-2048x1815.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/>institutions review the consumer&#8217;s credit reports and scores in the process of determining whether to extend credit or not.\u00a0 Various factors are considered in the evaluation process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Payment history<\/strong>:\u00a0 Were payments made in full and on time?<\/li>\n<li><strong>High Debt to Credit Utilization<\/strong>: How much credit is used compared to the total amount of credit that is available?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multiple Hard Inquiries<\/strong>: How many credit inquiries have been made within a period of time? Would this borrower be considered high-risk?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/what-is-a-credit-dispute-letter\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>errors on credit reports<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the consumer must take steps to correct them. Sometimes, tradelines are not listed accurately by lenders or creditors on credit reports.\u00a0 These errors, which could result in lower credit scores, must be corrected <strong>in advance<\/strong> of a new credit application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP 3: Evaluate options to pay for the new car<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Determine the price range of the car you can afford before deciding on the car you want to drive.\u00a0 Evaluate your finances and determine how you\u2019ll be able to pay for the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Should I pay with cash?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The advantage of purchasing a car with cash is that you own the vehicle free and clear.\u00a0 You will not pay interest on monthly loan payments, or have lease payments which do not build equity in a vehicle that can be sold later.\u00a0 However, car buyers must consider whether it makes the best financial sense to allocate funds to purchase a car with cash.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Should I enter in to a lease?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Leasing a car allows for driving a \u201cbetter car\u201d for less money.\u00a0 This option can be advantageous to some consumers as there is no down payment, lower monthly payments, and repair costs can be covered under the manufacturer&#8217;s warranty.\u00a0 At the end of the lease, the vehicle is returned to the dealership &#8212; you don&#8217;t own the vehicle. Issues such as early termination costs, mileage overages, or wear-and-tear must be addressed with the leasing company.\u00a0 After leasing, some consumers may choose to purchase the vehicle they had leased and enter a finance agreement to pay for it.\u00a0 Others may choose to enter a new lease for a brand new car.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Should I finance the vehicle?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The process for selecting a car can be tedious.\u00a0 Decisions involving which manufacturer, model, color, and options, as well as availability can make the purchase difficult.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equally important<\/strong> is the process to determine how to pay for the car.\u00a0 Questions such as: Do I have funds to put towards a down payment?\u00a0 Do I have a vehicle to trade?\u00a0 How much will the dealership give me for the trade? Which lender provides the financing rates and terms? Do I need to purchase a warranty?<\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2862\" src=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Photo-3-Couple-purchasing-a-new-car-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Photo-3-Couple-purchasing-a-new-car-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Photo-3-Couple-purchasing-a-new-car-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Photo-3-Couple-purchasing-a-new-car-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.consumerslaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Photo-3-Couple-purchasing-a-new-car-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Shop for the Financing<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Once the decision is made on the specific car you want to buy, and you know how much it will cost, it&#8217;s time to shop for financing. Whether its with a bank, credit union, or financial institution, explore and compare loan offers for interest rates, loan terms, and monthly payment amounts.\u00a0 Most dealerships encourage buyers to work with their finance manager for these arrangements. But beware of add-ons, such as extended warranties, GAP insurance, or extra equipment which add to the total cost of the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not feel pressured by the salespeople<\/strong> at the dealership.\u00a0 Take your time to review the documents. Think about the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Shop for the car, then, separately, shop for the financing.<\/li>\n<li>Review the Paperwork:\u00a0 Does the Buyers Order list all items you want on your car. Do the numbers add up?<\/li>\n<li>Is the amount of the down payment listed correctly?<\/li>\n<li>Is the amount of the trade listed correctly?<\/li>\n<li>Read the loan agreement carefully before signing.\u00a0 Do you agree to the terms?\u00a0 Payment due date?\u00a0 Do the numbers add up?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the paperwork is not correct, demand that it be corrected. If you&#8217;re not satisfied, you can always go elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP 4:\u00a0 Cost of Ownership<br \/>\n<\/strong>Do not overlook the cost to care for the vehicle. On average consumers keep a car for about 6 years, whether it\u2019s new or used, . Estimate expenses such as, maintenance, repairs, insurance, and fuel.
